Iran pledged to avenge the assassination of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a written statement attributed to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Saturday. 

The sanctions require any US-based involvement in the sanctioned companies to be reported to the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). 

The night passed without military action by either the US or Iran, but tensions remained high across the Middle East following the escalation in recent days.

“Iranian lives matter. Iranians are not just numbers in headlines," Kazemi family members who live outside of Iran told the Post. "The world must not look away."

As crowds jostled in Mashhad awaiting Khamenei's funeral cortege, the crowd chanted slogans demanding revenge on US President Donald Trump for his killing.

“In general, Ermia cared more about the suffering of others and his fellow human beings than about himself,” his mother told The Jerusalem Post.

“If we don't go into the streets for Iran’s freedom today, one day our children will have to do it instead. Today it is our lives, so that they may have a better future," he told his wife in January.

Ahmadinejad is one of many leaders and former leaders of Iran whose fates have been entwined with the war. Some reports suggested that Ahmadinejad might actually be helpful in some form.
