Spaish Presidency, Health, and Emergencies Minister Antonio Sanz called the fire "the most devastating fire to date in our region" and described the situation as an "unprecedented tragedy".

The fire has scorched some 4,600 hectares in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, local prefect Pierre Regnault de la Mothe said in a post on X/Twitter.

Both injured firefighters have been transported to the hospital to receive medical treatment.

"The main bottleneck with wildfires is in detection, with rescue services not being able to detect the fires before they become a major problem," Dr. Jenia Yurkovsky, co-founder of Firewave, said.

The area consumed by the fires reached 1,373 hectares (3,393 acres) as of early Sunday morning, up 7% from a day earlier.

Authorities have said the fires are the worst to hit the southeast since the 2019-2020 Black Summer blazes that destroyed an area the size of Turkey and killed 33 people.

The case joins others in a disturbing pattern seen since October 7, namely, Iranian intelligence operatives attempting to recruit Israelis through Telegram and other encrypted platforms.
