Dozens were detained in NYC on Monday during protests against US arms sales to Israel. Among those arrested was Chelsea Manning, calling for an end to US military support for Israel.

The ruling followed a procedurally fraught stretch in which the state repeatedly sought additional time and drew open judicial criticism.

This declaration of war is not over any concrete dispute. Its purpose is to undermine the legitimacy of a parallel state judicial institution – to challenge its composition, authority, and decisions.

The protesters, organized by the Peace Partnership coalition, demanded an end to the war, chanting “War will not bring freedom to anyone in the region."

The petitions involve wartime restrictions on anti-war demonstrations and the number of worshippers allowed at the Western Wall.

The police arrests in defiance of a court ruling pose a real danger to democratic norms but in parallel, the court must take into account the reality of wartime. 

Sunday’s decision signals that the justices are no longer dealing only with one night of demonstrations, but with the question of whether the state has a policy for protests under wartime conditions.

The enforced restrictions at the Western Wall sparked controversy after the High Court intervened in the dispute over Saturday night’s anti-war protests.
