Activity at Haifa Airport continues to grow, and now a solution is arriving for the resulting challenge: The Airports Authority has begun constructing a new parking lot that will include approximately 900 parking spots, aimed at addressing the rise in the number of passengers and flights at the airport.
The new parking lot is being built on an area of approximately 20 dunams (5 acres), north of the passenger terminal. The Airports Authority noted that Haifa Airport is undergoing a period of significant operational growth, with an increase in passenger and flight numbers and an expansion of flight options for residents of Haifa and the North.
However, along with the increase in passenger numbers comes a considerable challenge: Existing parking spaces at the airport are insufficient to handle the demand, and the authority is currently asking passengers to prefer arriving via public transportation as much as possible.
In parallel with the construction of the parking lot, the Airports Authority and the Haifa Municipality are examining an additional solution: Operating a high-frequency public transportation line directly from a parking lot in the city of Haifa to the airport. The goal is to allow passengers to leave their vehicles in the city and reach the airport without needing to search for parking near the terminal.
Until the new parking lot is completed and transportation solutions are finalized, the authority has launched an information campaign for area residents and passengers, calling on them to use public transportation and avoid arriving in private vehicles as much as possible.
The construction of the parking lot is another sign of expanding activity at Haifa Airport, which in recent years has become a more significant option for northern residents. As the number of flights and passengers grows, infrastructure capable of handling the new volume of activity is required - ranging from parking to transportation solutions to and from the terminal.
The Airports Authority emphasized that it is working together with the Haifa Municipality to address congestion and improve accessibility to the airport, noting that the new parking lot is expected to add approximately 900 parking spots upon completion of the work.
