Deni Avdija delivered the defining performance of his National Basketball Association career, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to a dramatic 114-110 win over the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament and securing a playoff berth with a historic all-around display.

Avdija finished with 41 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds, and two blocks, tying his season high in scoring while producing one of the greatest individual performances ever by an Israeli player. It was a night that resonated across the NBA, with headlines describing it simply as a “masterpiece.”

“It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me in my career so far,” Avdija said after the game.

In what was his first postseason appearance, the 25-year-old looked completely at ease on the biggest stage. Portland erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, with Avdija at the center of the comeback. He scored 14 points in the final quarter and made the decisive play with 16.1 seconds remaining, driving to the basket, drawing a foul, and converting the three-point play that ultimately sealed the victory.

“I think back to the beginning of the season, we weren’t very disciplined at staying together and finishing games,” he said. “I feel like we showed character today. We showed growth, we showed character, we showed we were capable of keeping our composure and making winning plays.”

Trail Blazers complete comeback

The Trail Blazers closed the game on a 17-5 run to complete the comeback. Jrue Holiday added 21 points, while Jerami Grant scored 16, including key baskets down the stretch.

Phoenix had surged ahead earlier in the fourth quarter behind a 24-4 run, with Jalen Green finishing with 35 points and Devin Booker adding 22. But Portland responded in the closing minutes, with Avdija orchestrating the offense and repeatedly attacking the rim.

His ability to control the game stood out as much as the scoring. Avdija shot 15-of-22 from the field, added 12 assists, and dictated the tempo throughout his 38 minutes on the court.

The win ended a four-year playoff drought for Portland and secured the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. The team will now face the San Antonio Spurs in the first round, setting up a matchup that will include one of the league’s most intriguing young stars in Victor Wembanyama.

For Avdija, the performance marked both a personal breakthrough and a historic milestone. He is set to become the first Israeli player to appear in the NBA playoffs, doing so not just as a participant, but as the central figure on his team.

“I feel like we showed character today,” he said again. “We showed growth.”

After years of development and flashes of potential, Avdija delivered when it mattered most, producing a performance that not only carried Portland into the playoffs but firmly established his place on the NBA stage.
