British police on Friday said they had charged a 45-year-old man with two counts of attempted murder following an antisemitic attack during which two men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, earlier in the week.
Following the attack, officials raised the national terrorism threat to its second-highest level, meaning a terrorist attack within the next six months is highly likely, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed stronger action to protect Jewish people.
Police said Essa Suleiman was charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place in relation to the attack. He was also charged with attempted murder in relation to a separate incident earlier on the same day in south London.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later on Friday.
Sa'ar denounces stabbing attack, recurring 'antisemitic marches' across London
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar denounced the UK's policies during a "horrific wave of antisemitism and Jew-hatred," in a post on X/Twitter on Thursday night.
"The UK government cannot claim to be fighting the horrific wave of antisemitism and Jew-hatred if it’s not fighting the rabid and explicit incitement against the Jewish state," Sa'ar wrote.
"Hate slogans and antisemitic marches in the streets of London aren't 'free speech,' they are incitement," he said.
"They bring terror directed against Jews. They must be banned," he added.
"The phrase 'Globalise the Intifada,' means killing Jews everywhere. It must be banned. This is what the British government must immediately do to fight antisemitism. Otherwise, it's just more empty words," he stated, while sharing a picture of two activists holding a banner reading the slogan during an undated protest in London.
